Glimpses of the Mekong Delta 4 ( Một thoáng Miền Tây 4)

Many of the trips I made during my university years were to the Mekong Delta. In the small town of Song Doc near the southernmost tip of Vietnam, my classmates and I spent time living in a military barracks. I had to accustom myself to certain aspects of army life, living frugally among the young soldiers stationed there and spending the better parts of each day painting by the shipyards. In Tra Vinh Province, I passed a month residing in the culture house of Chau Thanh Town and enjoyed finding new friends among the indigenous Khmer people. In Can Tho Province, I lived in the town hall of Phung Hiep and met new acquaintances who spent their lives on the river. Other towns I just visited for a couple days – too many to count – all charming in their own way. Even though the life in the Mekong Delta is so peaceful, the locals honest and plain, I did not focus on these images of serenity. I painted a different side of life on the Delta:  the toil of village life.

"...Có thể nói miền Tây là địa điểm thực tế thường xuyên của tôi trong các năm qua.Tôi đã ở trong doanh trại bộ đội tại thị trấn Sông Đốc Cà Mau, nơi tận cùng cửa biển của đất nước,làm quen với kỷ luật quân đội, sống tiết kiệm cùng các anh lính trẻ, suốt ngày lê la ra xưởng đóng tàu. Tôi đã ở trong khuôn viên nhà Văn Hoá thị trấn Châu Thành -Trà Vinh,làm quen với đồng bào Khơme.Tôi đã ở trong Uỷ Ban Nhân Dân thị trấn Phụng Hiệp - Cần Thơ, làm quen với người dân sống cả cuộc đời của họ trên ghe.v.v..Và những nơi tôi đi qua chỉ vài ngày....Nhiều lắm.. Cuộc sống miền Tây thanh bình, người dân thật thà, chất phác.Nhưng tôi đã vẽ một mảng khác trong cuộc đời họ . Những bức tranh dưới đây không nói về điều hạnh phúc của con người mà nói về Những- vất- vả -để- mưu- sinh- cuộc- sống..."

Artist Bio

Nguyen Ly Phuong Ngoc is an artist based out of Seattle. She is a graduate of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts and specializes in oil painting. Phuong Ngoc is also adept at gouache, water color and Chinese painting 国画.  In December 2010, Phuong Ngoc had her first public exhibition, “Portraits of Dreaming,” and was recognized by the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association for outstanding ability and unique style.

I can say that gouache was the main material I used outdoors on this trip while creating my works. Because the colors and brush techniques are similar to what one finds in oil painting, they gave me a strong sense of both intensity and nuance.

Making trips to the Mekong Delta, living with the river and its people, I recorded the local scenes with my colors.
